Wild Song Thrush Garden Advanced

Advanced garden management for song thrushes addresses snail prey, nesting habitat, and threats across the full annual cycle.

Key Facts

Song thrushes require 10 to 15 snails per day during the breeding season to meet chick protein needs
Garden snail populations are maintained by dense vegetation, log piles, and moist conditions
Thrushes establish anvil stones which are specific rocks they return to repeatedly for shell breaking
Breeding season from February to September means disturbance-free nesting habitat is needed for 7 months
Winter berry provision from shrubs including holly, hawthorn, and ivy supplements reduced invertebrate availability

Welfare Considerations

Song thrushes in gardens lacking the full range of seasonal food resources and habitat face nutritional stress across different seasons. Advanced habitat management that provides resources year-round maximizes thrush welfare.

What You Can Do

Maintain log piles and dense vegetation that support snail populations through the year
Plant berry-producing native shrubs for winter food supplementation
Avoid garden disturbance near song thrush nest sites from February to September
