Wild Sand Martin Advanced Welfare

Advanced sand martin welfare management addresses colony establishment, chick survival, and migratory challenges across the annual cycle.

Key Facts

Colony size correlates positively with breeding success through reduced individual predation risk
Chick survival peaks when invertebrate prey is abundant over water during June and July
Pre-migration fattening in August determines individual survival during the trans-Saharan crossing
Ringing programs at colonies provide survival estimates that track population health annually
Mink predation causes rapid colony abandonment with welfare costs for all breeding pairs

Welfare Considerations

Sand martins failing to fatten adequately before migration face starvation during the desert crossing. Colony management that reduces predation and maintains prey availability supports welfare across both breeding and migration phases.

What You Can Do

Support Wildlife Trust mink control programs protecting sand martin colonies
Donate to organizations maintaining artificial sand martin nesting walls at key sites
Advocate for water quality improvements that maintain invertebrate prey for colonial waterbirds
