Welfare Considerations

Feedlot welfare challenges are systemic: high density prevents normal social organization and creates competition for resources; mixing unfamiliar cattle causes fighting and stress; grain feeding causes digestive adaptation problems including subacute rumen acidosis in a proportion of animals; and dust and respiratory challenges are near-universal. Individual animals cannot avoid stressors they would evade in open range settings. Grass-finishing systems on pasture avoid most feedlot welfare problems.
