Wild Sand Martin Colony Advanced: Bank Creation Welfare

Artificial sand martin bank creation using purpose-built structures is proving highly effective for colony establishment.

Key Facts

Artificial banks using timber frames with drainage gravel and sand facing attract colonies rapidly
Sites with sandy substrate and good drainage are most quickly adopted
Nest tunnel blocks with 55mm diameter and 500mm depth provide appropriate dimensions
Colonies established at artificial sites within 1-2 years of installation in suitable locations

Welfare Considerations

Sand martin colonies at artificial banks benefit from more secure nest sites than natural riverbanks subject to erosion and flooding. Colonies at managed artificial sites show higher productivity from more stable nest architecture. Each colony established represents direct welfare benefit for dozens of breeding pairs.

What You Can Do

Install or support installation of sand martin artificial banks at suitable water body margins
Report active sand martin colonies to county bird recording groups for monitoring
Advocate for artificial bank installation at water management and restoration projects
