Dog Senior Nutrition and Welfare

Nutritional needs change significantly in senior dogs - appropriate dietary management supports health and welfare through the later years of life.

Key Facts

Senior dogs typically have reduced metabolic rates requiring lower calorie density
Protein quality (not quantity) becomes more important in elderly dogs to prevent muscle wasting
Joint supplements including omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin have evidence
Cognitive decline may be slowed by antioxidant-enriched and medium-chain triglyceride diets
Dental disease affecting nutrient absorption is very common in senior dogs

Welfare Considerations

Inappropriate nutrition in senior dogs - either deficiency or excess - directly compromises welfare. Age-appropriate diets that meet changing needs for protein quality, calories, and targeted supplements support healthy ageing and comfort.

What You Can Do

Transition dogs over 7-8 years to senior-formulated food following veterinary guidance
Discuss omega-3 supplementation and joint support options with your vet
Maintain regular body condition scoring for senior dogs to detect weight change early
