Dog Fireworks Desensitisation Protocol

Systematic sound desensitisation reduces fireworks fear in dogs - starting well before the fireworks season is essential for effective results.

Key Facts

Desensitisation requires starting at sound intensity well below the dog's fear threshold
Progress is made by very gradually increasing volume over days to weeks
Counter-conditioning pairs fireworks sounds with high-value food to change emotional association
Commercially available desensitisation CDs and apps provide appropriate graduated sound tracks
Progress should be measured by behavioural response, not time elapsed

Welfare Considerations

Fireworks fear causes intense suffering for predictable, preventable periods annually. Systematic desensitisation that changes the emotional response to fireworks sounds provides lasting relief that transforms the welfare experience of affected dogs.

What You Can Do

Begin a systematic desensitisation programme at least 3 months before fireworks season
Use commercially produced desensitisation sound tracks designed for gradual volume increase
Work with a clinical animal behaviourist if home programmes are not producing progress
