The mismatch between parrot cognitive capacity and typical captive conditions creates profound welfare problems. Parrots evolved for complex social lives, wide-ranging flight, and constant problem-solving — conditions nearly impossible to replicate in home environments. Feather-destructive behavior, screaming, and aggression are often signs of psychological suffering rather than behavioral problems. Even well-intentioned owners frequently cannot provide the environmental complexity, social companionship, and cognitive stimulation these birds require. The parrot welfare crisis is largely invisible because birds that suffer silently, or suffer in ways owners misinterpret, rarely receive appropriate intervention.
