Ducks are adapted to aquatic environments and suffer significantly when denied access to open water. Scientific evidence for the welfare importance of water access in farmed ducks is now substantial.
Denying farmed ducks access to open water prevents them from performing fundamental natural behaviours essential to their physical health and psychological wellbeing. Eye and nasal problems are significantly more common in birds without open water access. Providing even bathing pans significantly improves welfare.
