Rainbow trout are the most widely farmed salmonid in Europe, yet pre-slaughter welfare standards vary enormously. Electrical stunning before slaughter is becoming increasingly recommended and required.
Rainbow trout experience significant pain and stress during poorly managed pre-slaughter procedures. Electrical stunning is the most humane available method and can be adapted to continuous production systems. Reducing crowding and minimising feed withdrawal periods also significantly reduces pre-harvest suffering.
