Tail docking in pigs is performed routinely to prevent tail biting but causes pain and is prohibited except when necessary by EU law. Progress toward eliminating routine docking has been slow but is accelerating.
Both tail docking and tail biting cause pain and represent welfare failures. Tail docking prevents one form of suffering by causing another and by masking the management problems that drive biting. Addressing root causes through enrichment, stocking density reduction, and health management enables farming without routine docking.
