Avocet chick welfare during the vulnerable pre-fledging period has been studied in detail at managed reserves. Understanding chick vulnerability informs reserve management decisions that protect individual welfare.
Avocet chicks face multiple welfare threats during the first weeks of life, including cold weather, flooding, predation, and sibling competition. Reserve management that maintains stable water levels, provides suitable chick foraging habitat, and reduces predator access to nesting areas directly reduces these welfare risks. The welfare of individual chicks is a direct conservation priority given the small size of UK avocet breeding populations.
