Biomedical research using animals has produced medical advances that save millions of human lives. At the same time, welfare standards have improved dramatically over recent decades, and the field continues to evolve toward reducing and replacing animal use.
Research animal welfare has improved substantially since the adoption of the 3Rs framework, but significant challenges remain. Pain, distress, and suffering in laboratory animals are now formally assessed and minimized through refined protocols and analgesic use — representing real progress. However, the sheer scale of animal use in research, and the continued reliance on animal models for regulatory toxicology testing, means that aggregate animal suffering remains enormous. The field faces honest questions about the translation value of some animal models, and whether regulatory systems that require animal testing create barriers to transition even where alternatives are scientifically adequate. Welfare advocates within science are increasingly influential, pushing for institutional cultures that treat animal welfare as a scientific and ethical priority rather than a compliance checkbox.
