Laryngeal paralysis causes progressive breathing difficulty in older large-breed dogs. TECA-BO surgery and medical management significantly improve welfare outcomes in affected animals.
Dogs with significant laryngeal paralysis experience breathing distress during any exertion, severely limiting activity and quality of life. Surgical arytenoid lateralisation provides dramatic improvement in most cases, restoring the ability to exercise comfortably and significantly reducing heat stress risk. The welfare benefit of surgery in appropriately selected patients is substantial.
