Live animal transport welfare is determined by an intersection of regulatory standards, vehicle design, journey duration, and handling quality. Current regulations in most jurisdictions permit journeys far longer than welfare evidence suggests are humane for most species. The stress of transport is not simply a duration problem: the novelty of the environment, social disruption from mixing unfamiliar animals, noise, vibration, and thermal challenges all contribute to a cumulative welfare burden. Loading and unloading are consistently the highest-stress moments, yet they are often performed by the least skilled handlers under time pressure. The strongest welfare intervention is to reduce journey lengths — either by slaughtering closer to production sites or by shifting global trade toward carcass rather than live animal transport.
