Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) causes severe neurological pain and paralysis in susceptible breeds. Advanced surgical and conservative management has improved welfare outcomes significantly.
IVDD causes acute severe pain and potentially permanent paralysis if not treated rapidly. Dogs experiencing spinal cord compression are in genuine neurological pain requiring urgent intervention. Time from symptom onset to surgery is critical - delays of more than 24-48 hours significantly worsen prognosis. Recognising IVDD early and accessing emergency surgery promptly is the most important welfare intervention for affected dogs.
