Brachycephalic dog welfare represents a case where aesthetic preferences, amplified by social media and advertising, have created a welfare crisis on a massive scale. Millions of dogs are now living with chronic respiratory compromise so normalized that owners often mistake the distinctive snoring and labored breathing as characteristic rather than symptomatic. A dog that cannot breathe comfortably is experiencing constant welfare compromise, yet these traits have been selectively intensified over decades. The ethical responsibility is distributed across breeders who prioritize extreme conformation, buyers who choose these breeds without researching health implications, advertisers who feature brachycephalic dogs, and registries that have not enforced health-based breeding standards. Real reform requires all of these actors to change.
