Gastric dilatation and volvulus is a rapidly fatal emergency in large deep-chested breeds. Advanced prevention through prophylactic gastropexy and management strategies significantly reduces welfare emergencies.
GDV causes extremely rapid and severe welfare suffering through gastric expansion, shock, and tissue death. Emergency surgery when performed within hours significantly improves survival but causes significant suffering. Prophylactic gastropexy at neutering in high-risk breeds prevents GDV with minimal additional surgical risk and represents one of the most welfare-effective preventive interventions available for large breed dogs.
