FIP treatment with antiviral drugs has transformed outcomes for affected cats, but global access disparities mean that cats in many countries still cannot access these life-saving treatments.
FIP treatment has undergone a welfare transformation: from universally fatal to highly treatable within a decade. However, global access disparities mean this welfare transformation is not equally distributed. Cats in countries without licensed products, whose owners cannot afford treatment costs, or who lack access to specialist veterinary diagnosis still face death from a treatable disease. Improving global treatment access is an important and tractable welfare priority.
