Feedlot cattle welfare involves multiple interconnected challenges. The rapid transition from grass to grain-based diets required for fast weight gain causes digestive disruption, ruminal acidosis, and secondary lameness through laminitis — a chain of welfare consequences built into the production model. Respiratory disease spreads rapidly in high-density pens. Heat stress without adequate shade or cooling is a serious welfare problem in hot-climate operations. Social stress from large pen sizes and constant turnover of unfamiliar animals adds to the welfare burden. Yet feedlots are economically dominant in beef production because they convert grain to beef rapidly and at scale.
