Companion Animal Welfare and Cat Welfare Through Lifespan

Cat welfare across the full lifespan from kitten to senior requires different strategies, all based on understanding feline biology and behaviour.

Key Facts

Kittens in the sensitive period (2-7 weeks) need appropriate socialisation to humans and other animals
Adult cats need enrichment, social contact appropriate to their personality, and preventive health care
Senior cats require enhanced monitoring, adapted environments, and proactive pain management
End-of-life care including palliative treatment and timely euthanasia prevents prolonged suffering
A cat adopted today may live for 20 years - welfare planning across this whole period matters

Welfare Considerations

Feline welfare is a lifetime journey with different priorities at each stage. Understanding what cats need at each life stage enables genuinely good welfare from first day to last.
