Wild Animal Welfare and UK Upland Ecosystem Restoration

Upland ecosystem restoration in the UK is delivering welfare benefits for the diverse wildlife communities that depend on functioning upland habitats.

Key Facts

UK uplands cover 70% of the land area and support unique communities of birds, plants, and invertebrates
Peatland restoration sequesters carbon while providing habitat for curlew, golden plover, and dunlin
Bracken control by rolling and cutting creates nesting habitat for upland birds
Reintroduction of natural tree regeneration on upland slopes creates habitat complexity
Coordinated management across land ownership boundaries is essential for landscape-scale recovery

Welfare Considerations

Upland ecosystem restoration delivers welfare benefits for the full community of upland wildlife. Coordinated landscape-scale management achieves results that individual site management cannot.
