Wild Animal Welfare and UK Songbird Garden Support

Garden management for songbirds can reverse some of the welfare impacts of wider landscape change, supporting species from house sparrows to song thrushes.

Key Facts

UK house sparrow populations have declined by 71% since 1977 in some areas
Dense hedges and shrubs provide nesting habitat for house sparrows and dunnocks
Berry-bearing native shrubs including hawthorn and holly support winter thrushes
Suet feeders support insectivorous species including robins and wrens year-round
Log piles provide invertebrate foraging habitat for song thrushes and blackbirds

Welfare Considerations

Garden management for songbirds delivers direct welfare benefits in an increasingly hostile wider landscape. Each garden optimised for birds is a welfare refuge for multiple species.

What You Can Do

Plant native berry-bearing shrubs and dense hedges for nesting habitat
Provide suet feeders year-round for insectivorous species
Leave log piles and leaf litter as invertebrate foraging habitat
