Insect farming is growing rapidly as a protein source for food and animal feed. The welfare implications of large-scale insect production are scientifically uncertain but increasingly important given the scale of production.
Insect farming welfare sits at the most uncertain edge of animal welfare consideration. The evidence for insect sentience is weaker than for crustaceans or cephalopods — insects have distributed nervous systems, and their responses to noxious stimuli, while present, may be purely nociceptive without the evaluative suffering that most welfare frameworks require. However, certainty is not available, and the scale of insect farming — potentially trillions of individuals — means that even a small probability of morally relevant suffering represents a large expected welfare cost. Harvest methods vary in their speed and humaneness: chilling followed by freezing is faster and probably less distressing than slow heating. Environmental conditions during rearing — density, temperature, humidity — affect insect health and potentially welfare. The field needs both better sentience science and practical welfare standards for the most plausible welfare-relevant practices.
