Free-range egg production is widely perceived as high-welfare. Understanding what free-range actually means — and the welfare challenges in these systems — helps consumers make genuinely informed choices.
Free-range egg welfare is genuine but conditional. The label promises outdoor access, and outdoor access — when utilized — provides environmental complexity, foraging opportunity, and behavioral repertoire that indoor-only systems cannot match. But outdoor access is only welfare-positive if hens actually use it, the outdoor area is of adequate quality, and the indoor barn meets welfare standards for the majority of hens who spend most time indoors regardless of system. Range quality is often poor — bare, muddy, and lacking features that attract hens to use it. The welfare improvement of free-range over fully indoor systems is real for well-managed farms with high range utilization and quality outdoor areas; it is marginal or negligible for farms where range access is nominal and indoor welfare is poor.
