Agricultural waste management is not typically framed as a welfare issue, but its welfare dimensions are significant. Ammonia from manure accumulation causes chronic respiratory irritation and eye damage in housed animals. Hydrogen sulfide, produced in anaerobic lagoons, is toxic and has caused mass mortality when agitation releases trapped gas. Slatted floors — designed for manure management — cause foot injuries in pigs and lameness-predisposing leg conditions. Wet litter in poultry houses, resulting from inadequate manure management, causes the contact dermatitis observable as footpad burns and breast blisters. Each of these welfare harms is directly linked to manure management decisions. Better waste management — appropriate flooring, adequate ventilation, regular litter management, biodigestion — reduces welfare harm alongside environmental impact.
