Companion Rabbit Housing Beyond the Hutch

Evidence on why traditional small hutch housing is inadequate for rabbit welfare and what good housing looks like.

Key Facts

Rabbits require a minimum of 3m x 2m living space to perform natural behaviors
Traditional hutch housing restricts locomotion to the point of causing physical deformity
Rabbits are social animals and should be kept in bonded pairs or groups
Access to a secure run for several hours daily is a minimum welfare requirement
Indoor rabbits with free-roaming access often show better welfare than caged outdoor rabbits

Welfare Considerations

Traditional hutch housing fails to meet even basic rabbit welfare needs. Rabbits confined to small hutches cannot run, jump, or express natural behaviors, causing physical deterioration and psychological suffering. Housing reform is urgently needed in rabbit keeping.
