Wild Sperm Whale Deep Diving Welfare

The welfare of sperm whales as deep divers facing entanglement, ship strike, and noise pollution in the deep ocean.

Key Facts

Sperm whales dive to 2km depth in search of giant squid prey
Entanglement in deep-sea fishing gear causes welfare harm and mortality
Ship strikes are increasingly a mortality cause as shipping routes expand
Chemical and noise pollution affect sperm whale communication and health
Sperm whale social groups are highly complex with cultural transmission of behaviors

Welfare Considerations

Sperm whales live extraordinarily complex social lives in the deep ocean, far from human observation. The welfare threats they face from entanglement, pollution, and noise are largely invisible to us but cause significant individual suffering. Deep ocean welfare deserves much more attention.

What You Can Do

Support ocean health organizations addressing deep sea fishing impacts
Advocate for shipping speed restrictions in sperm whale habitat areas
Reduce plastic use to decrease marine debris that entangles marine mammals
