Wild UK Grey Seal Welfare

Conservation status and welfare of grey seals around the UK coast, including breeding colony management and welfare challenges.

Key Facts

UK hosts around 40% of the world's grey seal population with an estimated 120,000 animals
Grey seal pup survival depends on undisturbed beaches during the breeding season
Human disturbance at pupping beaches causes pup abandonment and mortality
Seal entanglement in fishing gear remains a significant welfare concern
Grey seals are sometimes blamed for fish stock decline and face localized persecution

Welfare Considerations

Grey seal welfare is threatened by disturbance during the vulnerable pupping period and by entanglement in fishing gear. Pups abandoned by disturbed mothers face starvation and death. Beach access management during the pupping season is a critical welfare protection.

What You Can Do

Keep dogs on leads and maintain distance from grey seal pupping beaches in autumn and winter
Report seal entanglement or injured seals to BDMLR or the SSPCA
Advocate for responsible beach access guidelines at key pupping sites
