Companion Dog Separation Anxiety Prevention

Evidence-based strategies for preventing separation anxiety in dogs through early intervention and graduated independence training.

Key Facts

Separation anxiety is easier to prevent than treat once established
Puppies should experience increasing periods alone from an early age in a positive way
Never allowing a puppy to be alone can create dependence that leads to anxiety
Graduated absence training pairs alone time with positive associations
Pandemic-era dogs showed elevated separation anxiety as owners returned to work

Welfare Considerations

Prevention of separation anxiety through early graduated independence training avoids the severe welfare compromise of established anxiety disorder. The brief discomfort of learning to be alone is vastly smaller than the ongoing suffering of dogs with untreated separation anxiety.

What You Can Do

Begin graduated alone time training with your puppy from the first week at home
Avoid creating hyper-attachment by practicing brief separations from day one
Seek professional guidance early if your puppy shows excessive distress when left alone
