Wild UK Suburban Wildlife Welfare

The welfare of wildlife in suburban environments and how garden management can support urban biodiversity.

Hedgehogs, foxes, bats, and many bird species have adapted to suburban environments
Connected garden networks function as wildlife corridors between larger habitat patches
Night lighting, pesticide use, and cat predation are primary welfare threats in suburbs
Citizen science programs including Garden BirdWatch generate valuable suburban wildlife data

Welfare Considerations

Suburban wildlife faces unique welfare challenges from human activities while also benefiting from some resources including gardens and reduced persecution in some cases. Sympathetic garden management creates welfare benefits for a wide range of species in heavily human-modified landscapes.
