Wild Great Spotted Woodpecker Welfare

Conservation and welfare of great spotted woodpeckers in UK woodland, and their role in creating nest holes for other species.

Key Facts

Great spotted woodpecker populations have increased significantly in the UK since the 1970s
The species excavates nest holes in dead wood that subsequently provide homes for many species
Woodpeckers are important indicators of woodland structural diversity and health
Garden bird feeders with peanuts and suet have enabled woodpeckers to colonize suburban areas
Cold winters cause increased feeder visits as natural food sources diminish

Welfare Considerations

Great spotted woodpecker welfare is closely tied to woodland structure including standing dead wood that provides both nest sites and feeding opportunities. Their role as keystone species creating holes for other birds extends their welfare significance to multiple dependent species.

What You Can Do

Leave standing dead trees where safe to do so to provide woodpecker habitat
Provide peanuts and suet in garden feeders to support woodpeckers through winter
Advocate for veteran tree protection in woodland management plans
