Wild UK Swifts Nesting 2026

Conservation of common swifts in UK urban and suburban habitats in 2026, with updates on nest brick programs.

Key Facts

Swift brick requirements are now mandatory in several English local authority areas
Existing colony sites are protected through planning policy in some jurisdictions
Swift conservation groups have mapped thousands of swift colony sites nationwide
Artificial towers have been built in several parks and open spaces as new colony sites
Swift populations are still declining overall despite conservation efforts

Welfare Considerations

Swift conservation in 2026 is building momentum through planning policy and community action. Individual swifts that return from Africa to find their nest sites destroyed face complete reproductive failure that year. Preventing nest site loss through planning protection is the highest priority welfare intervention.

What You Can Do

Register your local swift colony site with Action for Swifts
Advocate for swift brick requirements in your local planning authority
Install swift nest boxes or bricks on suitable buildings to create new colony sites
