Companion Cat Welfare Through Lifespan

A comprehensive review of cat welfare at each life stage and how to maximize quality of life throughout.

Key Facts

Kitten welfare peaks when socialisation is optimal and decreases with early weaning or isolation
Adult cat welfare is determined primarily by environmental quality and human-cat relationship
Senior cat welfare depends on early detection and management of age-related conditions
End of life welfare requires proactive planning and quality of life assessment
A lifetime approach to welfare prevents accumulation of welfare deficits at each stage

Welfare Considerations

Cat welfare across the lifespan requires different skills and investments at each stage. The quality of a cat's life is not determined at any single point but by the sustained quality of care, environment, and health management across all life stages. A lifetime welfare perspective is the most effective framework.

What You Can Do

Develop a lifetime health plan with your veterinarian from kittenhood
Adapt your cat's care to their changing needs at each life stage
Plan proactively for end-of-life care rather than waiting for a welfare crisis
