Wild Pintail Duck: Wintering Ecology

Pintails are elegant diving ducks that winter in the UK in internationally important numbers. Their welfare depends on undisturbed estuarine and coastal wetland habitat with abundant food.

Key Facts

UK pintail wintering population is of international importance with tens of thousands of birds
Pintails favour estuarine mudflats and coastal lagoons with abundant invertebrate food
They are highly sensitive to disturbance and avoid sites with regular human or boat traffic
Climate change is shifting pintail winter distribution and affecting arrival timing
Pintail populations are monitored through the Wetland Bird Survey scheme annually

Welfare Considerations

Pintail welfare during their UK winter depends on access to productive, undisturbed coastal wetland. Protected estuaries and coastal wetland reserves provide the sanctuary conditions pintails require.
