Evidence-based cognitive enrichment for zoo primates improves psychological wellbeing and reduces stereotypic behaviour significantly.
Primates evolved for cognitively demanding foraging and social environments. Zoo environments, however enriched, reduce cognitive challenge. Systematic enrichment programmes that rotate devices, include novel challenges, and use training to teach problem-solving significantly reduce boredom and stereotypies, improving observable welfare.
