Voluntary milking systems (robots) offer welfare benefits including cow-controlled milking frequency but also introduce new welfare challenges.
When designed and managed well, robotic milking systems can improve cow welfare by allowing cow-controlled milking, reducing milking-related stress, and enabling individual cow monitoring. However, poorly managed systems with high fetch rates and poor traffic flow can reduce lying time and increase lameness - demonstrating that technology adoption must be accompanied by management adaptation.
