Separation anxiety is a major welfare problem in dogs, but evidence-based treatments combining behaviour modification and medication can significantly improve outcomes.
Dogs with separation anxiety experience genuine panic and distress when left alone. Punishment for damage caused during absence worsens anxiety. Evidence-based treatment requires patience, often months of systematic desensitisation combined with medication for severe cases. Outcomes are good with proper treatment, but many dogs suffer unnecessarily due to lack of owner knowledge or access to specialist veterinary behaviour support.
