Zoo Snow Leopard Welfare and Space Requirements

Snow leopards require specific environmental conditions including elevated structures, cool temperatures, and large spaces to maintain good welfare in captivity.

Key Facts

Wild snow leopards occupy home ranges of 12-39 square kilometres
Captive snow leopards need elevated structures including high platforms and rocky features
Snow leopards are solitary except when breeding, requiring single housing outside mating season
Cool temperatures are preferred - snow leopards often show distress in hot climates
Species survival plan coordinates breeding between institutions to maintain genetic diversity

Welfare Considerations

Snow leopards in captivity can achieve reasonable welfare in well-designed facilities, but the mismatch between their natural ranging behaviour and zoo enclosures is fundamental. Elevated structures and cool environments are essential for physical and psychological welfare. Forcing contact between solitary cats causes significant stress outside breeding contexts.
