Wool supply chain welfare extends the farm-level analysis of sheep welfare into the processing stages that transform shorn fleece into textile products. From a welfare perspective, the critical issues are primarily at the farm stage: mulesing, shearing practice, and transport to slaughter. The processing stages — while having environmental implications — do not directly involve animal welfare in most cases. However, supply chain traceability that connects consumer products to specific farm welfare standards is essential for welfare certification to have meaning: without chain of custody documentation, certified farm wool can be mixed with uncertified wool without detection. The Responsible Wool Standard addresses this by requiring both farm welfare standards and chain of custody documentation, making it a more complete welfare certification than farm-only schemes.
