Common carp are the most widely farmed fish globally, yet welfare standards and research remain significantly underdeveloped relative to production volumes.
As the world's most produced farmed fish by weight, carp welfare deserves far more attention than it currently receives. Most carp farming is traditional or semi-intensive with limited welfare standards. As the global welfare conversation reaches aquaculture, carp should be included despite cultural assumptions that fish generally lack the capacity for welfare-relevant experience.
