Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are potentially fatal emergencies in dogs requiring immediate recognition and first aid treatment.
Heatstroke causes acute distress and organ failure, with high mortality even with treatment. Many cases are entirely preventable - leaving dogs in cars, exercising in midday heat, and inadequate shade and water access are preventable failures. Recognition of early heat stress signs including excessive panting and uncoordinated movement allows intervention before the condition becomes fatal.
