Sole ulcers are one of the most painful and common causes of lameness in dairy cattle, requiring both treatment and systemic prevention.
Sole ulcers cause pain comparable to a human walking with a nail through the sole of the foot - severe, constant, and limiting. Affected cows change their posture to avoid weight bearing, reducing feed intake and welfare. Early detection and treatment combined with preventive hoof trimming are both individually and systemically important welfare interventions.
