Early detection of arthritis in dogs allows treatment before pain becomes severe and irreversible joint damage accumulates.
Dogs with undetected and untreated arthritis suffer chronic pain that progressively worsens and limits all aspects of their life. The masking of pain by dogs and the gradual onset of signs mean that many dogs suffer for months or years before diagnosis. Proactive screening from age 5 in large breeds and from age 7 in all breeds would catch arthritis early enough for intervention to have maximum benefit.
