Natterjack toads are Britain's rarest amphibian, restricted to sandy heathland and coastal dunes where active conservation management is essential for their welfare.
Natterjacks at the edge of their range face chronic stress from marginal habitat. Pools that dry out before tadpoles metamorphose cause mass tadpole mortality - a significant welfare event at a small population scale. Habitat management including pool creation and scrub clearance directly reduces these welfare costs while maintaining habitat for sustainable populations. At such small population sizes, individual welfare losses have population-level significance.
