Barn owls face their greatest welfare challenges in winter when small mammal prey is under snow cover and cold temperatures increase energy demands.
Barn owls in severe winters experience progressive starvation over days to weeks. With minimal fat reserves, they cannot sustain more than a few days without food. Starvation is a prolonged and distressing death. Supplementary feeding during severe snow events by barn owl conservation groups directly prevents individual starvation. Nest box provision also offers shelter that reduces thermoregulation costs during cold nights.
