Pig Boar Welfare in Commercial Systems

Boar welfare in commercial pig farming receives limited attention despite significant welfare challenges from housing, handling, and reproductive management.

Key Facts

Commercial boars used for semen collection are housed in individual stalls limiting movement
AI boar semen is collected multiple times weekly throughout the boar's productive life
Boars are slaughtered at typically 2-3 years old when semen quality or libido declines
Social isolation of boars causes stress and stereotypic behaviour in individual housing
Training boars using positive reinforcement reduces handling stress during semen collection

Welfare Considerations

Boar welfare is often overlooked in pig welfare discussions focused on sows and piglets. Boars in AI studs face chronic social isolation in individual housing, repeated handling for semen collection, and early slaughter at peak productive life. Training boars to cooperate with collection procedures using positive reinforcement reduces handling stress. Social housing where compatible reduces isolation effects. These achievable improvements represent genuine welfare gains for an overlooked category of pig.
