Variation in birth weight within litters is a major driver of neonatal pig mortality and welfare problems. Modern breeding programmes have increased litter size but also variation, creating new welfare challenges.
Within-litter competition creates welfare problems for the smallest piglets who are most likely to be outcompeted, starved, and crushed. These are the individuals most likely to suffer without intervention. Active management of litter homogeneity through split suckling, strategic fostering, and supplemental nutrition for runts is a direct welfare intervention that prevents suffering.
