Separation anxiety is one of the most common and distressing behavioural problems in dogs. Early prevention during puppyhood is far more effective than treatment after the problem develops.
Separation anxiety causes genuine distress - affected dogs show panic responses including vocalisation, destructive behaviour, and self-injury during owner absence. Prevention is significantly easier and less traumatic than treatment. Establishing calm, positive associations with alone-time from the first days in a new home prevents the overwhelming fear response that develops when dogs are never accustomed to being alone.
