Flies cause significant welfare problems in cattle through annoyance, blood loss, disease transmission, and the stress of avoidance behaviour. Integrated pest management offers the most effective welfare protection.
Heavy fly burdens cause sustained distress to cattle. Animals that spend significant time in fly avoidance behaviour cannot meet their nutritional needs and experience constant irritation. Blood-sucking flies also transmit diseases that cause additional suffering. Effective integrated fly control - combining prevention, physical barriers, and targeted chemical treatment - significantly improves welfare throughout the grazing season.
