Sweet itch (summer seasonal recurrent dermatitis) causes severe itching and self-trauma in susceptible horses. It significantly affects quality of life and requires consistent management throughout the midge season.
Sweet itch causes intense, chronic pruritus (itching) that leads to self-mutilation, broken mane and tail hair, and disturbed sleep in severely affected horses. The welfare impact across the entire midge season (April-October) is substantial. Left unmanaged, horses may rub themselves raw and develop secondary skin infections. Consistent, proactive management from the start of midge season prevents the cycle of sensitisation and self-trauma.
